Blogs
According to WWW history, fourteen years ago in 1992, Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web, produced one of the first weblogs (blogs) releasing a technical statement detailing, among other things, the take up of his browser within CERN, the European high energy physics complex. Soon after came Netscape with a monthly production of a "What's New" business type blog that from 1993 until 1996 summarized almost daily events, links and commentary. Lacking the characteristics of contemporary blogs they remained that way until a free blogging service was set up in 1999 and simply called Blogger. Now owned by Google, Blogger made available to anybody with an internet connection a free blogging service and initiated the explosion of the blog and its supporting industry.
Today blogging has evolved into a mainstream web activity and it is now estimated that there are millions of blogs updated daily across the globe. From individuals to corporations blogging has empowered people the world over to contribute information whereas they were unable to do so before.
Blogging communities have sprung up and not only comprised of like-minded individuals but conversely as a group united by their use of specific blogging type utilities.
It has taken business over 10 years, since the Netscape blog of 1993, to awake to the commercial possibilities that blogging could provide by attracting large scale interest in products or services. It's all about communication.
