The ICDL is the result of a University of Maryland research project funded primarily by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS), and Microsoft Research to create the world's most comprehensive multicultural digital library of outstanding children's books. Today, the Library is managed by the International Children's Digital Library Foundation, a non profit corporation.
